Are your reports long, boring and lacking impact? You need to fix that.

Maybe you don’t think your reports are long and boring, but be honest, could it be true?

  • Maybe you don’t think your reports are long and boring, but be honest, could it be true?
  • Perhaps you are just used to producing the same old thing you always do.
  • The template is there, so you use it.
  • Your clients have never said anything before, so what’s the problem?
  • When was the last time you asked your client  how long they prefer your reports to be?
  • Have you asked them which pieces of information are important?

You probably don’t like reading boring content, so don’t produce it! Do the world a favour.

At Expert Proposals, we specialise in reviewing your current reports and quotes and make them more client-focused, visually appealing and impactful.

Clients read reports the way we read newspapers

Here’s the thing. Client don’t read everything in your reports. Sorry to shock you, but clients read reports the way we read newspapers (or online articles for those who no longer read newspapers).

So, how do people read?

Like this diagram:

  • Images
  • Headlines
  • Content

In that order.

Clients are time poor – so cut to the chase

I think you already know that people (clients are people too) have to process so much more information today, in a shorter timeframe than ever before.

So help them out, cut to the chase.

Don’t put your conclusions on page 179. Put them on page 1. Same with your key messages and, yes, price as well.

Have you heard about 1 page summary reports? That should be your goal.

How To Enhance Your Reports? First, make the content easy to read

You need the right balance of content on a page to aide easy processing.

Exploring the Evidence

It is widely known that we process images faster than words. There are extensive articles research on the topic.

We know that Instagram is doing really well because of their picture-first focus.

This is a really interesting area and we are going to use this article to dig into the evidence a bit more. This brings out the research geek in us and we will add more content over time as we find it.

Here’s some links to what we have found so far.

“U.S. researchers discovered that the human brain can interpret images that the eye sees in just 13 milliseconds – the first evidence of such rapid processing speed.”

The 5 second test

Here is a really interesting research article which challenges a commonly quoted “fact” across the internet that “we process visual information 60,000 times faster than text“.

Beautifully researched, but no hard findings yet.
